7 Easy Steps

DIY Lego Coat Rack

What’s not to love about homemade gifts? They’re cheap and they have your love built into them. It’s like two gifts in one! I make a lot of homemade gifts and this past Christmas was no exception. Especially since my husband was in a motorcycle accident and we were low on income. These DIY Lego coat racks are awesome!! Might I add that they were an amazing addition to his Lego Birthday Party?!

I had 6 boys to buy for and I spent around $25 total. For 6 gifts!

MATERIALS

  • LUMBER
  • ROUND TRIM PIECES (you can get these at Lowes or Home Depot)
  • SPRAY PAINT
  • GORILLA GLUE
  • COAT HANGERS
  • PICTURE HANGERS
  • SKIL SAW (or another saw that cuts wood with a straight edge)

1 – First you’ll want to gather your lumber. This will be the actual Lego brick part. I used free lumber. My husbands grandfather owns a construction company so we used their scrap lumber. Ideally, 1x’s would be the best for these since the 2x’s are heavier. I made most of mine from a 2×4 and 36″ long. Like I said, if I could go over I would have used a 1×4″ for all of them. We measured out 36″ and used a skill saw to cut them down. A couple of the boards were shorter, and that was okay too.

2 –  Spray paint. As you’ll see in many of my posts I use a lot of spray paint. I love that stuff! You’ll want to tape off the edges with each color. I suggest drawing out how big you want each brick/color before spray painting. That way you’ll have a clear idea what it will look like and if they’re the right sizes. Switch it up a bit too! Don’t be afraid to make different sizes. After you spray paint one color – be patient – let it dry and then do the next. Last thing you’ll want are your colors running.

3 – You’ll want to go ahead and nail the picture hangers on the back at this point. It’s harder to do them when the “knobs” are on the board. I used three for most of them. But remember, I used 2×4’s instead of 1×4’s.

4 – Next you’ll cut the trim pieces into smaller sections. This will be the protruding parts of the Lego brick. I cut mine around 1″ long, but they would look better around 1/2″ – 5/8″ long. After I cut my trim pieces I hand painted them with craft paint. You can use spray paint, but i  wanted to finish them without a long drying time so I used craft paint.

6 – After they were good and dry I used Gorilla Wood Glue and super glued them on to the boards. Let them dry overnight. Completely.

7 – Last step is adding the coat hangers. I purchased these at Wal-Mart, but you can probably find them cheaper somewhere else!

The Lego coat rack was a great hit! The kids loved them, they were cheap, and they are made with love. The perfect gift!!

These Lego Coat Racks were simple to make and an awesome gift for the boys. Not to mention, they saved in our wallets as well 🙂
